This book integrates the fundamentals of monetary theory, monetary policy theory and financial market theory, providing an accessible and comprehensive introduction to the many-sided interrelations between these fields of research. It provides the reader with the intellectual groundwork indispensable for understanding the workings and interactions of today’s globalised financial markets. The topics addressed in this book include, inter alia, alternative money supply regimes, money demand functions, monetary policy transmission, monetary policy effectiveness and the natural rate of unemployment, monetary political business cycles, and monetary policy strategies. Basic valuation models for stocks, and bonds and asset price linkages across currency areas are covered as well. Illustrated by carefully chosen examples and supported by extensive data analyses, this book is highly recommended to readers who seek an in-depth and up-to-date integrated overview about the ever-expanding theoretical and quantitative fields of monetary and financial economics.

This volume presents an integrated approach of the common fundamentals of rail and road vehicles based on multibody system dynamics, rolling wheel contact and control system design. The mathematical methods presented allow an efficient and reliable analysis of the resulting state equations, and may also be used to review simulation results from commercial vehicle dynamics software. The book provides also a better understanding of the basic physical phenomena of vehicle dynamics most important for the engineering practice in research and in industry. Particular attention will be paid to developments of future rail and road vehicles including motorcycles.

The latest state of simulation techniques to model plasticity and fracture in crystalline materials on the nano- and microscale is presented. Discrete dislocation mechanics and the neighbouring fields molecular dynamics and crystal plasticity are central parts. The physical phenomena, the theoretical basics, their mathematical description and the simulation techniques are introduced and important problems from the formation of dislocation structures to fatigue and fracture from the nano- to microscale as well as it’s impact on the macro behaviour are considered.

This compact and original reference and textbook presents the most important classical and modern essentials of control engineering in one book. It constitutes a harmonic mixture of control theory and applications, which makes the book especially useful for graduate students, practicing engineers and researchers interested in modeling and control of processes. This well written and easily understandable book includes a broad spectrum of methods for the analysis and design of control systems in a very thorough way. The book includes solved multitude of practical applications, examples, exercises and unsolved problems at the end of each chapter as well as Matlab tools which are freely available at the web page of the book. "This is an impressive book really worth to be published. I do not know of any modern textbook including such a broad spectrum of classical and modern methods for analysis and synthesis of control systems not being represented superficially but very thoroughly" Heinz Unbehauen, Bochum University.

The book provides a comprehensive, detailed and self-contained treatment of the fundamental mathematical properties of boundary-value problems related to the Navier-Stokes equations. These properties include existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions in bounded as well as unbounded domains. Whenever the domain is unbounded, the asymptotic behavior of solutions is also investigated. This book is the new edition of the original two volume book, under the same title, published in 1994. In this new edition, the two volumes have merged into one and two more chapters on steady generalized oseen flow in exterior domains and steady Navier–Stokes flow in three-dimensional exterior domains have been added. Most of the proofs given in the previous edition were also updated. An introductory first chapter describes all relevant questions treated in the book and lists and motivates a number of significant and still open questions. It is written in an expository style so as to be accessible also to non-specialists. Each chapter is preceded by a substantial, preliminary discussion of the problems treated, along with their motivation and the strategy used to solve them. Also, each chapter ends with a section dedicated to alternative approaches and procedures, as well as historical notes. The book contains more than 400 stimulating exercises, at different levels of difficulty, that will help the junior researcher and the graduate student to gradually become accustomed with the subject. Finally, the book is endowed with a vast bibliography that includes more than 500 items. Each item brings a reference to the section of the book where it is cited. The book will be useful to researchers and graduate students in mathematics in particular mathematical fluid mechanics and differential equations. Review of First Edition, First Volume: “The emphasis of this book is on an introduction to the mathematical theory of the stationary Navier-Stokes equations. It is written in the style of a textbook and is essentially self-contained. The problems are presented clearly and in an accessible manner. Every chapter begins with a good introductory discussion of the problems considered, and ends with interesting notes on different approaches developed in the literature. Further, stimulating exercises are proposed. (Mathematical Reviews, 1995).

This survey presents the theoretical methods of chemical engineering for modeling and simulation of industrial processes. On this base it is possible to formulate correct experimental conditions and to understand rightly the experimental results. The book uses the mechanics of continuous media approach for modeling of the simple processes as hydrodynamic processes, mass and heat transfer processes. The theory of the scalar, vector and tensor fields permit to create the basic equations and boundary conditions. The problems of rheology, turbulence, turbulent diffusion and turbulent mass transfer are examined too. The book incorporates a lot of fundamental knowledge, but it is assumed that the readers are familiar with the mathematics at engineering level and that they thought some special topics in usual university courses. It includes examples at the end of all chapters using the author’s investigations. Therefore, it is highly valuable for scientists as well as graduate and PhD students.

Kuklys examines how Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen’s approach to welfare measurement can be put in practice for poverty and inequality measurement in affluent societies such as the UK. Sen argues that an individual’s welfare should not be measured in terms of her income, but in terms what she can actually do or be, her capabilities. In Chapters 1 and 2, Kuklys describes the capability approach from a standard welfare economic point of view and provides a comprehensive literature review of the empirical applications in this area of research. In the remaining chapters, novel econometric techniques are employed to operationalise the concepts of functionings and capability to investigate inequality and poverty in terms of capability in the UK. Kuklys finds that capability measurement is always a useful complement to traditional monetary analysis, and particularly so in the case of capability-deprived disabled individuals.

Various types of composites are used in engineering practice. The most important are fibrous compositesy laminates and materials with a more complicated geometry of reinforcement in the form of short fibres and particles of various properties^ shapes and sizes. The aim of course was to understand the basic principles of damage growth and fracture processes in ceramic, polymer and metal matrix composites. Nowadays, it is widely recognized that important macroscopic properties like the macroscopic stiffness and strength, are governed by processes that occur at one to several scales below the level of observation. Understanding how these processes infiuence the reduction of stiffness and strength is essential for the analysis of existing and the design of improved composite materials. The study of how these various length scales can be linked together or taken into account simultaneously is particular attractive for composite materials, since they have a well-defined structure at the micro and meso-levels. Moreover, the microstructural and mesostructural levels are well-defined: the microstructural level can be associated with small particles or fibres, while the individual laminae can be indentified at the mesoscopic level. For this reason, advances in multiscale modelling and analysis made here, pertain directly to classes of materials which either have a range of relevant microstructural scales, such as metals, or do not have a very we- defined microstructure, e.g. cementitious composites. In particular, the fracture mechanics and optimization techniques for the design of polymer composite laminates against the delamination type of failure was discussed.
